Expanded Commuter Benefits

A key part of my platform are Expanded Commuter Benefits, which seeks to provide free, all-encompassing access to the MTA system for all employees. This would include subways, buses, commuter rail lines, as well as toll-free access for employees at MTA bridges and tunnels. This initiative is about making transportation more accessible for our workers, reducing the financial burden of commuting, and ensuring that those who keep the system running can benefit from the services they help maintain.

Why Commuter Benefits Matter

  • Free Access to All Modes of Transit: This initiative isn’t just about subways and buses—it would extend to regional bus lines, the Staten Island Railway, Metro-North, and LIRR, ensuring that employees who live in different parts of the region can commute to work without additional costs. Whether you’re commuting from Staten Island, Westchester, Long Island, or within the five boroughs, you’ll have free, seamless access to all modes of transit. This is especially important for employees who rely on multiple transit modes to reach their job sites.

  • Toll-Free Access to Bridges and Tunnels: For employees who drive to work, tolls at MTA-operated bridges and tunnels can be an added expense. This initiative ensures that MTA employees will have toll-free access at these facilities, providing more flexibility and financial relief for those who drive. Whether you cross the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, the Robert F. Kennedy (Triborough) Bridge, or any other MTA-operated facility, you won’t have to worry about paying tolls to get to work.

The Economic Impact

  • Increased Savings for Employees: Commuting costs can quickly add up, especially for employees who rely on commuter rail lines or frequently cross MTA bridges and tunnels. By providing free access to these services, this initiative will increase take-home pay for employees by reducing out-of-pocket expenses. The average cost of a monthly LIRR or Metro-North pass can range from $300 to $500, and tolls can cost hundreds more annually. The Expanded Commuter Benefits initiative will result in significant savings for all employees.

Why It Matters Now

  • Supporting Our Workforce: MTA employees are the backbone of the transit system, keeping it running smoothly for millions of commuters every day. Yet many of these employees still face the financial burden of commuting costs. This initiative is about giving back to the workforce by making transportation more accessible and reducing the cost of living. All-encompassing access to the MTA system ensures that employees can focus on their jobs without worrying about the high cost of commuting.

  • Strengthening Employee-Employer Relationships: Offering all-encompassing free commuter access is a tangible way to show that the MTA values its workforce. Employees will see that their employer is invested in their well-being and committed to reducing the financial burdens they face. By making it easier for employees to commute, the MTA strengthens its relationship with its workers, fostering a stronger, more supportive workplace culture.

A Commitment to Employee Support

Expanding Commuter Benefits is about ensuring that every MTA employee has free, all-encompassing access to the system they help run. Whether you rely on subways, buses, regional transit lines, or need to cross bridges and tunnels, this initiative ensures that your commute is cost-free and convenient.

This initiative reflects a commitment to fairness, financial relief, and employee well-being. Together, we can push for expanded commuter benefits that support every worker and make commuting easier for everyone. Let’s ensure that no employee has to pay to access the system they keep running every day. By expanding these benefits, we build a stronger, more unified workforce and create a future where employees are truly valued.

this is why your vote matters

Since I’m running as an independent candidate and not part of a slate, your vote is crucial. I believe in choosing candidates based on their merits—not because they’re bundled into a group.
