4-Day Workweek pilot

One of the most exciting proposals in my campaign is the 4-Day Work Week Pilot. This groundbreaking plan aims to offer an optional, 4-day work week without any reduction in pay or benefits. Stations employees could work four days instead of five, with the option of either a 3-day weekend or a mid-week RDO to provide more flexibility and better work-life balance. This initiative could significantly improve our quality of life while maintaining the same level of compensation.

Let’s take a look at the facts and why this is so important for us:

Why a 4-Day WorkWeek?

  • Boosting Productivity: Numerous studies have shown that shorter work weeks lead to higher productivity. In a trial conducted in Iceland, productivity levels remained the same or improved across most workplaces that moved to a 4-day week, with many employees reporting increased focus and efficiency during work hours . Microsoft Japan saw a 40% boost in productivity when it tested a 4-day work week .

  • Improving Work-Life Balance: For Stations employees, working 5-day workweeks often lead to burnout, stress & less time with our families. A recent UK study found that 78% of employees with a 4-day week reported being happier and less stressed. This initiative would provide you with more days to spend with your loved ones, pursue personal interests or simply recharge.

  • Positive Mental & Physical Health: Overwork is linked to both physical and mental health issues, such as hypertension, anxiety, and depression. A 4-day work week can help reduce stress levels, decrease burnout, and improve overall mental health. Employees who work fewer days often report less stress and better overall well-being .

  • A Flexible Workforce: This initiative is optional—it allows Station Agents the freedom to choose what works best for their lifestyle. Some may prefer a traditional 5-day schedule, while others might benefit from the additional day off for rest or personal commitments. This flexibility makes our workforce stronger and more adaptable.

The Economic Impact

  • Maintaining Full Pay and Benefits: Unlike some 4-day work week proposals that suggest reducing hours and pay, my plan keeps your full salary and benefits intact. This means no financial loss, but a significant gain in personal well-being and overall job satisfaction.

  • Better Retention and Recruitment: Cities and companies that have piloted 4-day work weeks have reported increased retention rates and improved employee satisfaction, which are key to attracting and retaining a workforce . This can help our union grow stronger and promote a healthier work environment.

It’s Time for Change

In a city as fast-paced and demanding as New York, Stations employees deserve innovative solutions that match the challenges we face. The 4-Day Work Week Pilot offers us the chance to lead the way in modernizing how we work—improving job satisfaction, reducing stress & giving us the time we need to enjoy life outside of work, without any reduction in pay.

This initiative represents more than just a new work schedule; it’s a path to a better work-life balance and a commitment to your well-being. As your Vice President, I will push to make sure this pilot becomes a reality, giving every Stations employee the option to take back control of their time while still providing for their families. Together, we can set a new standard for our profession.

Let’s embrace this change and make our work work for us.
